Room Service…if that’s not a phrase that rolls deliciously off the tongue, Her Thriftiness doesn’t know what one is. And delicious is just the word for the thriftily fab vintage store on North Loop Boulevard just a few short blocks off of North Lamar.
Although Room Service certainly lives large nestled among other promising shops on a quaintly curving section of North Loop, its poster-decked exterior walls only hint at what’s in store for the 50s focused shopper. Her Thriftiness actually moaned a time or two as each beautifully appointed nook called for her attention. This is no row-by-row antique store! Charming little alcoves and corners highlight house-wares, furniture, knick-knacks and decades of amazing attire. A leather bowling ball case sits atop a 30s end table, while a t-shirt from ACDC’s 1996 Ballbreaker Tour flutters overhead lit up by a silver mod sconce.
Her Thriftiness must have been in a purple passion during her visit because a set of six gold and purple barware tumblers at just $29 smiled their Mad Men smile at her followed closely by just-her-size purple roper boots for $28. Vintage postcards, lamps, rows of shoes, record albums, kitchen gadgets and more are artfully jumbled but still clean and eye-catching. Even the ceiling gets in on the act with a never-ending overhead art display. Sadly, your Thriftstress did not have enough time to peruse the enticing jewelry display found at the checkout counter so that will have to wait until her next visit. With a section of inventory 20% off each and every month (June is house-wares) you can be sure that follow up visit will be very soon!
The extremely adorable Bill took a few minutes away from creating an attractive display to share Room Service insights. Seven obviously dedicated dealers keep the store stocked via nation-wide shopping trips. Fave decades are the 30s to the 70s and prices range from mere pennies on up. Now this isn’t a flea market…this is an ever-changing collection of vintage finds coveted by everyone from local college students to the trendiest central Texas decorating divas. The thrift store shopper’s mantra could have been invented here: if you want it, buy it, because it likely won’t be here next time. Her Thriftiness’ tender heart bled for a fellow shopper who had come back for something he “just saw a few days ago” but no go.
But what good is an amazing New Look woman’s frock if you don’t have an equally amazing sofa to drape yourself across while sipping a martini? Room Service’s furniture will set your heart a-flutter. Any Austinites with uninspired abodes have no one to blame but themselves, what with Room Service open seven days a week from 11:00 to 7:00. A rare cache of Eames chairs currently hold the limelight but they won’t last long. Easy chairs, sofas, cocktail tables, credenzas and other pieces are reasonably priced and in excellent condition.
Even if you plan to visit soon, start your trip with a look at their website – www.roomservicevintage.com. So clever! Furniture pieces currently for sale are featured to give you a head start on your shopping. Room Service also buys; take a look at their website for details. They don’t do consignment but they do offer layaway. Room Service is located at 107 E. North Loop Blvd., 78751. Phone is 512.451.1057.
As much as it pains the Discount Diva to admit it, she doesn’t know everything thrift. What are your favorite places and best bargains?
Until the next find!
